Punjab to Develop 40MW Canal-Top Solar Project to Boost Clean Energy and Land Efficiency.

In a major step toward sustainable energy and efficient land use, the Punjab government has approved a 40MW grid-connected canal-top solar photovoltaic (SPV) project. Implemented under the Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA), the project will utilise the state’s extensive canal network—originating from rivers like the Satluj, Beas, and Ravi—for solar panel installation. Building on the success of earlier 20MW pilot projects, the new initiative will be developed on a Build, Operate, and Own (BOO) model. Power generated will be procured by the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) at a benchmark tariff of ₹2.30 per unit, subject to regulatory approval. Developers can bid for up to 20MW and will lease canal stretches from PEDA for 28 years. The project aims to expand Punjab’s solar capacity—currently over 1,400MW—toward its 3,000MW target by 2030, aligning with India’s national clean energy goals while conserving fertile agricultural land.
