“Powering equality — gender balance is key to a truly sustainable energy future.”

Women Hold Only 32% of Jobs in Global Renewable Energy Sector: IRENA Report.

A new report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) reveals that women occupy just 32% of full-time jobs in the global renewable energy sector — a figure unchanged since 2019. The report, Renewable Energy: A Gender Perspective (Second Edition), highlights persistent gender disparities, with women holding 45% of administrative roles, but only 28% in STEM positions and 22% in technical trades like installation and operations. Leadership roles remain particularly skewed, as women represent just 19% of senior positions. IRENA’s Director-General Francesco La Camera emphasised that achieving gender parity demands strong data, inclusive policies, and cross-sector collaboration. The report urges governments and companies to implement equal pay, flexible work options, and mentorship programmes to remove systemic barriers. Without diversity and gender inclusion, IRENA warns, the global clean energy transition risks losing both momentum and fairness.
