PM Surya Ghar Yojana powers clean energy growth, cuts bills and emissions.
Kanpur Shines as Solar Hub with 64 MW Rooftop Capacity.
Kanpur has emerged as a key contributor to Uttar Pradesh’s renewable energy push, achieving around 64 MW of rooftop solar capacity under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana. With 20,756 rooftop solar systems installed, the district ranks third in the state, according to data from the UP New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA). UP energy minister AK Sharma congratulated residents for embracing clean energy. Experts estimate that the installed capacity generates nearly 96 million units of electricity annually, significantly lowering power costs for consumers and reducing dependence on conventional sources. The solar output also helps cut carbon dioxide emissions by about 80,000 tonnes each year, equivalent to the environmental benefit of roughly 35 lakh trees. Since the scheme’s launch in February 2024, installation momentum has remained strong, with 80–90 systems added daily across homes, housing societies and common areas. Officials highlighted attractive subsidies and low-interest loans as key drivers behind Kanpur’s rapid solar adoption.
