ISRO-backed study highlights vast opportunities for ground-mounted solar expansion.
India’s Solar PV Potential Pegged at 3,343 GWp in Landmark Report.
India has an estimated solar photovoltaic (PV) potential of 3,343.37 GWp, according to a new report released by Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi. The report, Solar PV Assessment in India (Ground Mounted), was unveiled alongside the inauguration of a training programme on solar cell and module manufacturing by the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) and MNRE. The nationwide assessment, the most detailed to date, leveraged high-resolution geospatial data from ISRO satellites to identify suitable wastelands for solar development. The study factored in land slope, solar exposure, proximity to roads, substations, and power infrastructure, offering a comprehensive map of opportunities for large-scale solar deployment. Joshi said the findings will play a critical role in green energy corridor planning, targeted state policies, and de-risking investments. The report underscores India’s vast renewable potential, marking a milestone in long-term clean energy planning.
