Hydrogen for India—clean, indigenous, and future-ready.

India Focuses on Reducing Imports in Hydrogen Production: NITI Aayog.

Dr V.K. Saraswat, Member of NITI Aayog, has emphasised that India’s current efforts in hydrogen fuel are focused on reducing import dependency and strengthening domestic capabilities. Speaking in Bengaluru, he said India aims to produce 5 million metric tonnes of hydrogen by 2030 under the ₹19,200 crore National Hydrogen Mission. Research and development are underway in areas like hydrogen charging stations, high-pressure cylinders, electrolysers, and hydrogen storage. Three Hydrogen Valley projects—50 MW, 100 MW, and 500 MW—are already being developed across the country. Saraswat highlighted ongoing work in green hydrogen production using solar power, as well as future plans to produce hydrogen through nuclear energy, which he termed the “cleanest and cheapest.” India is also exploring blending hydrogen with CNG and expanding infrastructure, with nine hydrogen centres being set up nationwide. The focus is on cutting costs from $4–5 per unit to $1 through domestic manufacturing and innovation.
