Cleaner Energy, Lower Emissions — Powering India’s Green Transition.
India Achieves Record Growth in Solar and Wind Power in First Half of 2025: Report.
India generated record levels of solar and wind power in the first half of 2025, significantly cutting emissions, according to energy think tank Ember. Solar generation rose by 17 TWh—up 25% from last year—boosting its share in total electricity to 9.2%. Wind power grew by 11 TWh, a 29% increase, raising its share to 5.1%. Combined, renewable energy growth outpaced electricity demand, reducing the need for fossil fuels. Nuclear output rose 14%, while hydro rebounded 17% after last year’s decline. Consequently, coal-based generation fell by 22 TWh (3.1%) and gas generation dropped 34%, leading to a 24 million tonne reduction in carbon emissions. The report noted that electricity demand grew only 1.3%—the slowest since the pandemic—due to milder weather and lower industrial activity. Despite this, the surge in clean energy demonstrates India’s accelerating shift toward renewable power, strengthening its path to a sustainable, low-carbon future.
