Clean energy takes the lead — renewables surpass coal in global power generation
Solar and Wind Power Outpace Global Electricity Demand for the First Time.
In a historic milestone, global solar and wind power generation has grown faster than electricity demand for the first time, signalling a potential turning point in the clean energy transition. According to a new report by energy think tank Ember, solar power rose by a record 31% and wind by 7.7% in the first half of the year, together adding over 400 terawatt-hours, more than the total increase in global electricity demand. This surge allowed renewables to overtake coal in total power generation. Fossil fuel generation fell slightly, marking what experts call a “plateau in emissions.” China and India led the charge, with both countries’ renewable growth outpacing demand and cutting fossil fuel use. However, the U.S. and E.U. saw increases in fossil generation due to policy reversals and weaker renewable output. Analysts view the global shift as proof that clean energy can sustain rising power needs sustainably.
