India’s Solar Push Shines Bright — But Regional Gaps Remain

PM Surya Ghar Scheme Powers 16.5 Lakh Homes with Rooftop Solar: Minister Joshi.

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi announced that the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has successfully provided rooftop solar systems to 16.5 lakh households across India as of July 2025. Launched in February 2024 and implemented by MNRE, the scheme aims to equip 1 crore homes with solar rooftops by FY 2026-27. A total of over 58 lakh applications have been received through the National Portal. Leading states include Maharashtra (2.34 lakh), Gujarat (2.28 lakh), and Uttar Pradesh (1.2 lakh). However, northeastern states like Arunachal Pradesh (0), Meghalaya (6), and Sikkim (9) have seen minimal adoption.

In parallel, the government is advancing its Green Hydrogen Mission, with SECI completing its first green ammonia auction under the SIGHT programme, achieving a winning bid of ₹155.75/kg. The solar initiative underscores India's push for clean energy, though uneven regional progress highlights the need for tailored outreach and infrastructure support.
