JN Port Congestion Strains India’s Logistics, Hits AC Manufacturing.

India’s logistics resilience is under pressure as severe congestion at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority disrupts critical supply chains. The logjam has forced leading rotary compressor manufacturers, Highly Electrical Appliances India and Midea Group to halt production due to delays in imported components. The situation has been aggravated by global geopolitical tensions, with transhipment containers being offloaded at JN Port, choking terminal capacity. Highly Electrical Appliances, which imports nearly 2,000 containers annually from China and Japan, has seen its Ahmedabad operations stall, directly impacting India’s air-conditioner market during peak summer demand. Although India has restricted compressor imports to 30% under new norms by the Bureau of Indian Standards, encouraging domestic manufacturing, raw material shortages are undermining these efforts. Importers cite major bottlenecks at Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals, operated by PSA International, where long queues and slow container movement continue to hurt industrial output.
