Fewer documents, digital processing, faster vessel clearances.
Government Streamlines Seaport Immigration to Boost Ease of Doing Business.
The Government of India has streamlined immigration procedures at seaport Immigration Posts (IPs) to enhance efficiency and support ease of doing business under the One Nation One Port initiative. As per a June 2 office memorandum issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, immigration officers will now collect only seven mandatory documents for granting immigration clearance to vessels, significantly reduced from the earlier requirement of 22 to 29 documents across ports. The revised framework includes three pre-arrival documents, two on arrival, and two at the time of sailing, with additional documents such as the Stowaway Declaration or Diversion Letter required only if applicable. Boarding of vessels by immigration officials will also be conducted selectively, based on a standardised risk assessment matrix. To ensure uniformity and transparency, document templates have been standardised and will be integrated into the Maritime Single Window portal by the Ministry of Ports Shipping and Waterways. All seaport immigration processes will be conducted digitally after integration with the Bureau of Immigration’s systems, enabling faster clearances and reduced compliance burden for the shipping industry.
