ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) aims to make 70% of its steel production ‘Green Steel’ by 2027, aligning with India’s upcoming Green Steel Taxonomy.
Green Steel is defined as steel with emissions below 2.2 tonnes CO2e per tonne of finished steel. The company plans to achieve this through renewable energy, scrap processing, digitisation, and reduced energy usage. AM/NS India’s current emission is 2.23 tCO2e/tfs, slightly above the green threshold, but it targets a 20% cut by 2030 from the 2021 baseline. Its production capacity is 9 MTPA, expected to rise to 15 MTPA by mid-2026. The government is expected to support the shift by procuring substantial volumes of Green Steel in FY 2026–27.
