World’s Largest Container Carrier Backs India’s Shipping Ambitions with Major Fleet Move.

MSC to Flag 12 Ships in India, Strengthening Ties with Nation’s Maritime Sector.

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the world’s largest container carrier, will flag 12 of its vessels in India, CEO Soren Toft confirmed following discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during India Maritime Week in Mumbai. The vessels, each with capacities between 3,000 and 5,000 TEUs, will sail under the Indian flag as part of MSC’s commitment to deepen its engagement in India’s shipping, port, and logistics ecosystem. With this move, MSC will become India’s third-largest private shipowner—after Great Eastern Shipping and Seven Islands Shipping—surpassing competitors AP Moller–Maersk and CMA CGM, who recently flagged two and four ships, respectively, in India. The decision underscores India’s growing role as a global maritime hub and aligns with the government’s push to expand the country’s flagged fleet and maritime influence. MSC’s announcement further strengthens the long-term partnership between India and one of the world’s most influential shipping players.
