India Adds 18 GW Solar in H1 2025, Records 31% Growth; Q2 Sees Historic 11.3 GW Surge.

India installed 18 gigawatts (GW) of new solar power capacity in the first half of 2025, marking a 31% rise compared to last year, according to Mercom India Research’s Q2 2025 Solar Market Update. The April–June quarter alone saw a record 11.3 GW commissioned, up 67% from Q1 and 145% higher than Q2 2024, making it one of the strongest quarters ever for solar additions. Solar contributed 64% of total new power capacity during the period. The growth was driven by developers rushing to partially commission projects before June 2025 to secure 100% ISTS charge waivers, alongside rising demand from discoms for round-the-clock renewable power. Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra together accounted for nearly 78% of new capacity. India’s total installed solar capacity reached 116.4 GW by June 2025, representing 24% of the country’s total power base. However, tendering and auction activity slowed sharply due to delays in PPA signings and transmission constraints.
