Transforming Tehri into an all-weather tourism hub with sustainability at its core.
ADB, India Sign $126 Million Loan Agreement to Develop Climate-Resilient Tehri Lake Tourism.
India has signed a $126.42 million loan agreement with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to develop sustainable and climate-resilient tourism infrastructure around Tehri Lake in Uttarakhand. The project aims to position the Tehri Garhwal district, one of the state’s most climate-vulnerable regions, as a year-round tourism hub while boosting local livelihoods. More than 87,000 residents and 2.7 million annual visitors are expected to benefit from improved facilities, upgraded waste management systems, disaster preparedness measures, and inclusive tourism planning. Key interventions include climate-resilient infrastructure, nature-based solutions to mitigate landslide and flood risks, and capacity building for institutions. The initiative also emphasises social inclusion, with livelihood grants for women, youth, and MSMEs, universal access for persons with disabilities, and a women-led disaster risk management program in pilot villages. Officials said the project will serve as a model for sustainable tourism, combining job creation, income diversification, and climate resilience.
