Strengthening Atmanirbhar Bharat, SAIL’s steel fortifies India’s newest stealth frigates in a landmark naval commissioning.
SAIL Powers Indian Navy’s Project 17A: 8,000 Tonnes of Critical-Grade Steel Supplied for INS Udaygiri & INS Himgiri
State-owned Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) has supplied around 8,000 tonnes of critical-grade steel for the Indian Navy’s newly commissioned stealth frigates, INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri, part of the cutting-edge Project 17A. Commissioned by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh at the Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam, this milestone marks the first time two frontline combatants built at different shipyards were commissioned simultaneously. The steel was sourced from SAIL’s Bokaro, Bhilai, and Rourkela plants. By indigenously developing and supplying special-grade steel for these advanced warships, SAIL is playing a vital role in strengthening India’s defence self-reliance and reducing dependence on imports, directly supporting the Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives. SAIL has previously supplied steel for landmark naval projects, including INS Vikrant, INS Nilgiri, and INS Surat, underscoring its strategic partnership with the Indian Navy in fortifying the country’s maritime defence capabilities.
