Stakeholders push for policy fixes as CHB roof-right issues hinder wider rooftop solar adoption.
Chandigarh Accelerates PM Surya Ghar Scheme as 148 Homes Achieve Zero Electricity Bills.
At a citywide stakeholder meeting on the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, Chandigarh officials urged faster rooftop solar adoption to help residents achieve zero-electricity bills. The event, chaired by Saurabh Kumar, Secretary (Science & Technology & Renewable Energy), brought together 80 RWA members and major federations, including FOSWAC and CRAWFED. Presentations by CREST and CPDL highlighted the scheme’s strong impact: 148 out of 673 beneficiaries have already reached zero power bills within nine months, supported by simplified procedures, faster subsidy releases, and digitalised PPA signing. Officials emphasised a payback period below five years, negative billing benefits, and efficient application processing through the National Portal. Civil society flagged key hurdles, especially the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) roof-right issue affecting nearly 60,000 flats, limiting rooftop installations. Stakeholders also sought clarity on accepting power of attorney and alternative documentation to ease approvals and expand scheme participation.
