Cold chain strength, exporter network, and modern infrastructure make Vizag the backbone of India’s seafood trade.
Visakhapatnam Port Becomes India’s Top Seafood Export Gateway with $2.19 Bn Shipments.
Visakhapatnam (Vizag) Port has emerged as India’s leading seafood export hub, handling shipments worth $2.19 billion in FY24, nearly 30% of the country’s total $7.38 billion exports, according to MPEDA. Strong cold chain infrastructure, hatcheries, exporters, and processing units have positioned Vizag as the backbone of India’s seafood trade, says Port Authority Chairman Dr Madhaiyaan Angamuthu. Frozen shrimp dominated exports at $5.17 billion, followed by frozen fish and squid. The US ($2.71 bn) remained the top market, with China and the EU also significant buyers. Vizag Port’s deep-draft container terminal, 650 reefer sockets, real-time monitoring systems, and proximity to 17 processing plants and 10 hatcheries ensure freshness and efficiency. Leading exporters like Nekkanti, Devi, Coastal, and Sandhya Marines drive volumes, while hatcheries ensure aquaculture sustainability. With India targeting $14 billion in seafood exports by 2030, Vizag Port’s modernisation and eco-friendly practices will anchor growth in global markets.
